Dangers of Plastic Mats
Carcinogens
Either the material itself, such as Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), or the materials used in the making of the product, can pose a risk to health.
Production of PVC and PER produces dioxins as a byproduct. Dioxins are classified as a human carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) listed as priority pollutants.
During manufacture, harmful carcinogens and respiratory toxins, such as isocyanates found in polyurethane (TPU/PU), can be released.
Phthalates & Hormone Disruption
Conventional exercise mats are often made from materials like polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which can contain chemical additives called phthalates.
Phthalates are known for their potential endocrine-disrupting properties, which means they can interfere with the normal functioning of the hormonal system in the human body.
Over time, exposure to these chemicals, through direct skin contact or inhalation, potentially leading to hormonal imbalances and related health issues.
Harbour Bacteria
Most exercise mats may provide an ideal environment for bacteria, fungi, and viruses to thrive, especially due due excess sweat and physical contact during exercises.
Since conventional mats might not have antimicrobial treatments, the porous surfaces can absorb moisture and become breeding grounds for germs, potentially leading to skin issues, odors, and other hygiene-related issues for users who do not regularly clean and disinfect their mats.
Environmental Destruction
The production and disposal of conventional yoga mats made from materials such as PVC can have severe consequences on the environment.
Most materials are not biodegradable, and during its manufacturing and breakdown, it can release toxic chemicals into the environment, contributing to pollution.
The majority of mats eventually end up in landfills, taking hundreds of years to break down, leeching chemicals and increasing micro-plastic pollution.
Over time, as these materials break down in landfills, they can leach toxic substances, like phthalates and heavy metals, contaminating soil and groundwater.
Poor Grip
Have you ever noticed that the more you sweat, the more you lose your grip? This is particularly problematic during practices intense sweaty sessions.
This lack of grip when wet can compromise the safety and effectiveness of a workout.
